West African Center for No-
Till Agriculture International
WALCENTAI · Tubmanburg, Bomi County, Liberia
Jenneh Farms has established and is operating, along with Agriculture and You, a training farm — the West African Center for No-Till Agriculture International (WALCENTAI), near Tubmanburg in Bomi County, serving multiple purposes.
Experiential Training Farm
As a functioning farm growing various crops — including rice, vegetables, tilapia, and palm trees — the underlying purpose of WALCENTAI is to provide experiential training to graduates of Liberian schools in the practicalities of working on and running a farm. WALCENTAI also provides short-term courses to existing farmers on more effective farming techniques.
First Full-Year Class — Graduated
The school's first full-year class of 18 students graduated in May 2026. Their majors ranged from rice production to vegetable production, tree crops, and aquaculture.
Seed Multiplication Site
WALCENTAI operates a seed multiplication site so that high-quality imported seeds can be multiplied to the volume necessary to supply our farming communities and others.
Technology Testing & Innovation
WALCENTAI serves as a test location for new technologies before introducing them to our farming communities. For example, we are experimenting with various rice strains and irrigation strategies, including SRI strains which do not require a fully flooded field. Farming communities have very little margin for error, so we want to be as sure as we can be that any innovation will be successful before it is introduced.
WALCENTAI has also experimented with planting rice in the same pond with tilapia. Testing results indicate a win-win situation for farmers who use traditional flooded-field cultivation: the rice receives a natural fertilizer from the fish waste, the tilapia receive protein from algae that forms around the rice stalks, and the environment is cleaner because fish waste does not accumulate in the pond. The farmer does not need to apply pesticide to the rice field, as insect eggs and larvae are eaten by the fish.
